Content Warning: This is a dark, angsty ficlet. There’s major character death. (They get better)
Kara gave the last of the trees a meaty shove and clapped her hands lightly, to shake off the dirt and tree bark that clung to her palms. She’d been called away from National City about twenty minutes ago to respond to a catastrophic landslide in Oregon that looked like a job for Supergirl. The villain trade had been a little light lately ever since the League went public, and she heard-
A thin crackle.
“Kara, get back to the Tower,” it was Alex, and her voice was strained, trembling. “Come back here right now. Directly here. Don’t stop anywhere and get here as fast as you can.”
Her feet had already left the ground by the time Alex had finished her message. Kara took off and ascended almost straight up, so that when she went hypersonic it didn’t harm anyone below.
“Alex?” she called, as she came in for a landing on the balcony. “What is it?”
Alex was inside with the others, wearing her costume but not her makeup or mask. She was deathly pale and her eyes were red rimmed and puffy from crying. Her voice hitched.
“I don’t know how to tell you this,” Alex began.
Kara’s stomach dropped.
“Tell me what?”
Alex went still, as if the words would not leave her. Kara could see her straining with the effort, cords standing out on her throat.
“Tell me what?”
“I… I can’t do this…”
“Tell me what?” Kara demanded.
“Lena’s been shot.”
Kara stared at her. Her eyes went wide and she felt a cold rush through her body as if someone had opened a door behind her into a blizzard.
“Where is she?”
“Kara, try to stay calm, let me-“
“I want to see her now, Alex. Where is she?”
Alex swallowed.
“She’s, ah, gone, Kara.”
“Gone where?”
“They tried to resuscitate her, but there was too much damage to her heart.”
“Okay, so we need a transplant? Do we have a candidate? Or an artificial one? She probably has one in her lab.”
A manic frenzy began to overtake her, as though energy crackled down her limbs. What Alex was saying made no sense. Lena wouldn’t need to be resuscitated. She was fine. She had to be fine. Lena was fine. That was that. Kara would go wait for her in her hospital room by the bedside, and-
“She passed, Kara. She didn’t make it.”
Kara blinked.
“Didn’t… make it… passed… you mean she… wait… Alex what the fuck are you saying to me?”
Alex looked away, hugging herself.
“She died, Kara. Lena’s gone.”
She stood there for a shocked instant, paralyzed, some part of her mind shielding her from the full implication of what she just heard.
Then it slammed into her like a freight train. Like an earthquake. Like the shockwave from her exploding home world. Kara had been off saving some rich fuck’s house from fucking mud and Lena was dead. Lena was dead. Lena was-
Kara screamed.
The initial blast blew Alex off her feet and sent her sliding a good ten feet across the floor as she clapped her hands over her ears. Every window and every piece of glass in the Tower shattered at once and every one in the surrounding buildings cracked. All over the city, dogs began barking.
When Kara fell to her knees, the world around her was rimed with frost; her wail had been an arctic blast. Alex sat up, staring at the blood on her palms that had trickled from her ears. Some distant, emotionally controlled, Kryptonian part of her concluded that she’d probably just destroyed her sister’s eardrums.
Alex was trying to say something but the words didn’t reach her. Everything was far away, on the other side of a low whine in her ears and the sound of her own rushing blood in her veins. Red-sun fire boiled within her, setting her eyes alight and wreathing her in vapor as her tears turned to steam.
“Kara,” she finally heard Alex say, but it was too late.
She flew straight up, heedless of the rent she tore in the roof of the Tower as she took flight. She screamed again, a wail of primal torment and rage, and the world went silent.
Truly silent.
The one sound she always listened for above all others was not there. The steady drum beat was not there. Kara lashed out at herself, tearing at fistfuls of her hair.
An inescapable certainty seized her: Lena had died knowing Kara was not going to save her.
Another scream, followed by twin beams of infinite heat blasting skyward like a false sunrise, bathing the world below in crimson hues. Part of her wanted to sweep her gaze down and burn it all, just start smashing and tossing and punching and wreck everything she could lay her hands on.
Her family, her home, her culture, her foster father, her aunt, they were all taken from her. Kara gave and gave and gave and no matter how she martyred herself the world just kept taking.
They took her Lena.
Kara looked down. Rage burned furnace hot inside her chest, threatening to consume her. Why wasn’t someone protecting her? Why was this allowed to happen? Someone just shot her?
She would find who did it and she would end him. She’d tear him to shreds with her bare hands and she would know who was responsible for this and she would smash and burn her way to them and they would pay. She would make them pay.
And her Lena would still be gone.
Nothing Kara could do would bring her back. She was helpless. She crushed her head in her hands and screamed and screamed again; there were military aircraft and police helicopters approaching and she didn’t care.
It was as if some great hooked claws had rent her open, as if every single one of her old wounds had burst at once. Kara had died for this world twice over and this was how they repaid her?
It was worse than that.
In her miserable fucking cowardice Kara has never told her.
Lena would never know how much Kara loved her. She would never smile for Kara again, never crinkle around her eyes as she laughed or look so achingly beautiful as she became lost in some scientific problem or journal article. She had been Kara’s red sunrise and now the sun was set forever.
There was no bringing her back.
Wait.
Kara’s eyes flew open.
There was a way. Clark had confessed it to her, and warned her never to try it.
Fuck that.
Kara rocketed straight up, tearing through the atmosphere until the void clapped straight around her. She had to be free of all resistance, not because it would slow her, but because she would ignite the atmosphere. This might not even work. She might solar flare right in the middle of it and die.
Maybe if she did she’d be with Lena. Maybe Rao would actually do something for her for once and she’d find herself in sunlit fields under a red sky with her Lena there for her.
Anything had to be better than this.
Kara flew. She put every iota of force she could muster into her flight, curving around the Earth. Within moments she was making complete orbits every few seconds.
It’s working, she thought. The red shift.
At this speed, all suns were red. The sky was an endless chaos of red pinpricks.
Faster.
Kara didn’t know how she flew. Not even her precious Lena had been able to crack that question, and she’s tried. Kara had never attempted to find her top speed, never tried to find out how fast she could go.
She could go faster.
Beneath her, Earth was frozen. When she used her super-speed, her mind sped up with it, and everything slowed to a crawl.
She was close now, she could feel it. She just had to go faster.
Faster.
FASTER
And she did.
The stars were gone. The Earth was gone. There was only endless black and-
Void. Nothingness. It had no color, nothing to actually see, just a limitless nothing.
Almost. There was one thing in the darkness, in the endless Outside.
“Clark?”
He was there with her in the void, just there, cape and spitcurl and all. Clark. Kal-El. Kara’s final mission from her people and the greatest of her many failures. Her cousin.
“What happened?” he said.
“It’s Lena,” Kara blurted.
He looked at her with big sad eyes. “Do you mean Lex’s sister?”
Kara blinked. “Who the hell else would I mean, Clark?”
“Oh,” he said. “When I got here you two hadn’t met yet, I suppose. You’re friends with her?”
Kara looked at him.
“Where are we?”
“The other side of the speed of light. This is what happens when you go superluminal without a warp drive or a hypergate.”
Kara flinched back.
“From your perspective you haven’t left yet,” said Kara. But how did…”
Her eyes went wide. Of course. She didn’t realize it at first because she had outrun the concept of movement itself.
She was still moving.
All she had to do was…
Stop.
Kara’s stomach did a backflip and she vomited into the vacuum, turning in space so she didn’t have to watch orbs of her own puke falling into the atmosphere.
She dove, straight down into the sky, chased by everlasting sunrise.
It only took a glance, and Kara saw a red streak headed north for Oregon, away from National City. She was watching herself fly away.
It worked.
It worked!
She slowed. She stopped. She listened. She found it.
Lena had left the Foundation and was walking downtown, probably to her new favorite coffee spot, just another woman in the crowd. Since she’s turned over control of the company to Sam and focused her working days on her philanthropy, she’d become softer, more casual, more, as she put it, west coast. She was just strolling down the street in a hoodie and scrolling her phone on her way to her inevitable end.
Kara steeled herself.
I’m Supergirl. I can do anything.
She swept low over the downtown crowd and landed in front of Lena.
She was so beautiful, so soft. So confused. She stared at Kara.
“I thought you were going to Oregon and we were getting dinner later?”
“Come with me now. Please. Please, Lee. I’m begging you.”
There was a brief, heavy pause. Kara swallowed hard. Lena looked at her for the barest moment, then allowed herself to be scooped up into Kara’s arms and flown gently, so very carefully, to the Tower.
When she landed, Kara gingerly set Lena on her feet and took a short step back. Alex came running into the room.
“Kara?”
“What?” said a voice in her ear. Her own voice, on her comms, entangled somehow because she was in both places at once.
Alex drew her weapon and aimed it at Kara’s head, gently taking Lena’s arm and pulling her back, then poked her ear.
“Kara you’ve got a doppleganger here. I’m not sure if she’s extra-dimensional or a shapeshifter.”
Kara sighed when she felt the rush behind her, the gust of air and the heavy landing of boot heels on the balcony.
“Don’t move,” Kara told Kara.
“I won’t,” she told herself.
“Who are you and what are you do-“
Kara turned and looked at herself. She’d experienced this too many times before. Shapeshifters, a clone, an evil version of herself from a broken timeline.
This was different in some inexplicable way, and the pain came.
They both screamed, not so loud this time, and suddenly Kara was actually in two places at once, looking at herself looking at herself in an infinite loop and then…
One.
Kara was staring at Lena and Alex, standing where her past self had been standing a few moments earlier. She shook her head and… Lena.
Lena!
Kara rushed to her, gathering her up in a fierce hug, nuzzling her nose into her hair to take in her scent.
“You’re alive!” Kara exulted.
“You’re covered in mud,” Lena protested, pushing her back.
Kara let her.
Lena looked at Kara, then at Alex.
“Wait,” she said, soft eyes searching. “How did I get here, exactly?”
“How did you get here?” said Alex. “I don’t remember you coming in. I thought I was calling Kara back. I had to tell her something. It was…” her brows furrowed.
Kara swallowed, hard.
Wait. Why had she come back? She’s dealt with the landslide but she… just went hypersonic to get here? Why?
It didn’t matter. She was gripped by conviction. She just knew, somehow, that she had to do this.
“Lena, I’m sorry about the mud. Listen, since you’re here, I wanted to ask you… want to hang out tonight? At my place?”
“S-sure,” Lena said, blinking.
“What’s wrong?” said Alex.
“I don’t know,” said Lena. “I felt this odd sensation for a moment and then it was… almost like deja vu, but then…” she trailed off. “I need to get back to my office.”
“I’ll change and walk you back,” said Kara.
“Right. I’ll wait in the rec room.”
Lena turned and walked slowly out of the room, muttering to herself.
Alex stared at her.
“What was that about?”
“I’m telling her tonight.”
“Telling her what?”
“That I’m in love with her.”
Alex looked at her flatly.
“Well,” she said, “it’s about fucking time.”

“wE nEvEr ReMoVeD aNyThiNg fOr bEiNg tOo gAy.”
Man, the producers and writers of Supergirl on The CW really did just lie, gaslight and queerbait for sport, huh?
Kara almost dying and her biggest pain/loss of all time was losing her HOME, and hurting LENA.
LENA’S FACE was the last thing she’d see.
I repeat, in the Crisis crossover script they really had Lena as Kara’s biggest loss in life — equal to that of watching her home planet destroyed and losing her family as a child.
They could’ve added in the time she hurt Alex or the idea of losing Alex, or losing Mon-El more than once, worrying about her friends, etc.
But they really just said nope… in her final moments of life, Supergirl would be thinking about her home planet, and Lena Luthor.
LENA’S FACE WAS THE LAST THING KARA PICTURED BEFORE SHE (NEARLY) DIED.
That’s some next level romantic soulmate shit. Between Maines’s book confirming they knew what they were doing and it was queerbait, and a SGCW / Batwoman writer making them official in the DC/Arrowverse canon follow up comic via a romantic date on the page and online confirmation when asked —
Kara/Lena really were that ship.
Supercorp really was endgame.

Supercorp head canon: Lena Luthor hates kale. It’s the literal worst. She just…hates heart disease and high cholesterol more. Which run in her family on both sides. And Lionel was diabetic. Lex was pre-diabetic but wouldn’t do anything about it. So Lena just eats super clean, gets her steps in, does three sessions of zone three cardio a week, and resistance trains.
Initially, Kara thinks these are all attributes of her CEO type-A lovable neuroses. Until Lena is waiting for her annual bloodwork…and has a panic attack. And makes a kale smoothie.
And that night Lena explains that Kara is actually correct, kale is vile but it’s a good source of fiber. And she went through a phase where she ate an unhealthy amount of raw spinach. Lena explains that her family has bad metabolic genetics. And Kara is just like:
So the kale will help you live longer?
And Lena half shrugs, nods, hopefully?
Suddenly, a change occurs. Kara Danvers cannot get enough kale. Have you ever had an air fried pot sticker? Kara just ate fifteen. And she had a side of bok choy.
Lena kind of can’t belive it. Because sure eating super healthy is something she prioritizes, but it’s a downer when no one else around her is doing it? Like Alex and Kelly eat healthy…but it’s not extreme. Nia sometimes makes questionable choices in energy drinks but generally Lena thinks she has a balanced diet. Kara eats as though she auditioning for the role of human dumpster in Dumpster Fire the Musical.
Until suddenly, Kara doesn’t. Suddenly when the super friends go out to eat and Lena gets a goat cheese salad, Kara gets one too. Kara always sees if they can add chicken though. Kara likes to make soups and that winter they eat hearty stews and delicious curries. And one day it just—Lena has to ask.
“Kara why are you eating like—?”
“Like you?” Kara says setting down the last plate she was drying. She walks over and lifts Lena onto the counter. So she can stand between her legs. “Because I like you?” She pecks Lena’s cheek. “I want you around forever. And if eating this way is going to help, you bet your bucket, I’m eating kale with every meal.”
Lena blushes.
“Not every meal.”
“No.” Kara says crinkling up her nose. “I also read in one of those books? About like marriage and family life.” Lena’s eyebrows go up. “You know books about how to be married and like raise kids?” Lena did know..:but not that Kara was reading that. “I just figure it will be easier to teach good nutrition habits to our children if you and I are on the same page about nutrition values now.”
Which is , great, but Lena is surprised to know Kara Danvers is planning to raise apparently multiple children with her, when last time she checked they were still platonic best friends.
“Kara, are we dating?” Lena asks.
“No, I don’t think so. Not yet. Soon though,” and then the Kryptonian turns around to finish putting away silverware.
“Would you want to go out on a date?”
“Yeah. I’m not picky. I mean,” here Kara gestures to Lena’s penthouse where Kara does basically live. “On Krypton…like we’d be considered married already. So um, I’m good with whatever. Dating first? Just straight to a wedding. Or even just filing a marriage certificate.” Lena is still on the counter, and it feels like the whole world has vanished from under her perch.
“You would marry me tomorrow?”
“Culturally, Lena, I married you ages ago. And I should have said something. It’s okay if you don’t want this. I will get my stuff out of here tonight, but—“ Lena leapt into Kara’s surprised arms. They kissed, twirling in the kitchen.

“You didn’t jump,” Kara said.
Lena glanced up from her lo mein container, chopsticks in hand. “Jump?” Lena asked curiously.
Kara nibbled her lip thoughtfully, staring down at her potstickers. The evening had been a quiet one - a welcomed change of pace, after a wonderful and chaotic afternoon at Alex and Kelly’s wedding. When all was said and done - after the couple had left for their honeymoon and the party had quieted, after Eliza had taken Esme home for a fun week making chocolate chip cookies with her grandmother - Kara and Lena had found themselves in Kara’s apartment, settling down in their pajamas with a dinner of Chinese takeout.
“For Kelly’s bouquet,” Kara said. “You didn’t jump.”
Lena shrugged, digging into her food with her chopsticks again. “It wasn’t heading towards me.”
“You could’ve used magic,” Kara suggested, thinking of how a certain other super had used her powers to yank the flowers midair.
“And start a duel with Nia?” Lena grinned. “Seemed unwise. Besides, she has a likely candidate.”
Kara smiled.
“At least I was there,” Lena teased softly. “I didn’t see you in the crowd.”
Kara shrugged. “It’s a human tradition.”
Lena tilted her head. “What did Krypton have?”
Kara grimaced. “Genetic testing. AI matching. Rules about guild marriages,” she said, “My uncle destroyed the AI, at least. But romance was secondary on Krypton.”
“What about now? On Argo?”
“Romantic love is… still an alien concept, on Argo,” Kara said thoughtfully, popping another potsticker in her mouth. “It existed in some of our stories. But our upbringing, our culture- we had to squash a lot of that down.”
“And now?”
“Now it’s like…” Kara’s voice had lowered to a murmur, and Lena noticed a pink tint rising in her cheeks. Kara cleared her throat, staring into her food. “Now it’s like they’re marrying a close friend,” she continued. “I wouldn’t say they have romance like Earth does.”
“Like marrying a friend,” Lena mulled.
Kara quietly picked at her food.
“And what about you?” Lena said, partially curious, partially… well. She knew Kara could hear how her heart had started pounding, as much as she wished she could hide it.
“Me?”
“You grew up there. But you’ve been here for so long. Where do you fall?”
Kara’s brow crinkled. “I think I…like all the little things,” she murmured. “Giving flowers and chocolate. Kissing. Holding hands.”
“But?”
“Not a but,” Kara said as she glanced up - still avoiding Lena’s eyes, but looking thoughtfully ahead. “It feels so alien to me, but in this wonderful way. Exhilarating. Strange. I feel like I have this chimeric type of romance in my head - not Earthian, not Kryptonian. Like romance is…”
Kara grew quiet, turning her head to her food again, staring silently as the blush on her cheeks seemed to deepen.
Lena watched for a moment, taking in the unmoving kryptonian - the hint of tightness in her posture, the unusual muteness and stillness. “What is romance for you, Kara?” Lena whispered.
Kara slowly tilted her gaze up to meet Lena’s. “My perfect partner at a game night,” she confessed quietly. “Knowing someone so well that it feels like magic when we’re together.”
Lena let out the breath she didn’t realize she had been holding.
Kara nibbled nervously at her lip. “You- you don’t have to see it that way,” Kara said, her voice cracking. “It’s not- it doesn’t have to change anything. But I’ll understand if it’s too much…”
“I feel it too,” Lena whispered. “When I’m with you. It always feels like magic.”
“Really?” Kara said. “You could want- you-”
“I didn’t want to catch the bouquet unless it was for you,” Lena confessed. “I just- all I want is to be with you.”
Kara smiled wide, and Lena watched on as the tension seemed to melt away from the still-blushing kryptonian’s frame. “I love you, Lena.”
Lena smiled back. “I love you too.”
#there is a lot that I'd love to dig into and say on this but I am going to leave it at a ficlet for now#supercorp#karlena#mel writes ficlets

also on ao3.
Lena smiles to herself as she watches Kara zip through National City’s most exclusive luxury mall. She’s like a honey-drunk bumblebee, bouncing from aisle to aisle, descending on some random item every five seconds just to mutter hmm and dart off again.
Lena is moving at a more civilized pace. She has long since stopped trying to keep up, both with her best friend’s not-quite-incriminating measure of super speed and her unfathomable decision-making process.
“Lena help,” Kara pouts, suddenly back, familiar and warm at Lena’s side. “Do fifteen-year-olds like anything?”
Lena doesn’t take her eyes off the art books she’s been perusing, but she also doesn’t stop herself from leaning in, her shoulder resting briefly against Kara’s, their hips grazing. A friendly gesture. A welcome back. “You remember Ruby, right?” she teases. “Cute? Bright? Probably six feet tall by next Wednesday?”
Kara huffs. “Yes, but she's—you know. Cool now.” She makes a gesture that’s somewhere between jazz hands and a bomb exploding. “What do cool teenagers like?”
Lena sends her a self-deprecating smile. “Do consider who it is you’re asking.”
Kara’s gaze tumbles from Lena’s face to her chest to her hands, and then she nods. Lena feels like she should be insulted by Kara’s quick acquiescence, but all thought leaves her mind when Kara steps closer, reaching across Lena’s body to play with the head of a fat round brush. Lena watches the fine bristles spread wide around the pads of Kara’s ring and middle finger, and tells herself that she isn’t affected by the situation at all.
“You know,” she breezes, veering away from the wisp of Kara’s breath against her temple, “Ruby’s been sketching a lot more, lately.”
Kara, immediately revived, follows Lena over to a glass case marked with Holbein’s logo. But when she glances up at the price tags, she goes pale. “Seven hundred dollars?” she yelps. “For colored pencils?”
Lena hums. “They’re pastels,” she explains, flipping the case open with a pleasing wood-on-metal snick. “High-grade pigments, no fillers.” She runs her fingers down a length of cobalt blue, watching Kara’s throat bob when she reaches the gold lettering along its side. “I hear they lay down incredibly soft,” Lena hears herself say, her voice low in the narrow space left between them. “Rich and easy. Just a hint of pressure is enough to achieve whatever effect you desire.”
Kara looks up, her glossy pink lips now inches away from Lena’s own. “Since when do you know about art materials?” she rasps.
Lena breaks into a light sweat at the question. “Well, you know,” she stammers, straightening. “It’s. No secret that I’m a patron—” She gestures helplessly, trying to step away again but finding herself trapped between the display case and Kara’s body. “That I—I’ve always had a thing—”
Kara’s eyebrows twitch as she waits for Lena to finally finish a sentence, a smile tugging at one corner of her mouth when Lena fails to do so. Her amusement at Lena’s floundering should embarrass her, but combined with the close heat of Kara’s body and her cocky smirk, Lena finds it alarmingly arousing.
“I have literally never heard you talk about art before,” Kara smarms. “Oh wait! Actually I specifically remember you canceling on Bruce Wayne’s charity gala when you realized he was having it at the Museum of Modern Arts, two years ago.”
“Kara—” She’s still so close. Lena is beginning to feel a little lightheaded.
“You were already in Gotham,” Kara points out.
“Listen,” Lena flusters. “I am a well-rounded—”
Kara’s eyes are dark and sparkling. “You were his date.”
“...I was his friend,” Lena corrects. “Bruce and I were never—not like—” She gestures between Kara’s body and her own, the movement greatly inhibited by their closeness, and ceasing entirely when she realizes where her argument is headed.
Kara bites down on what Lena is sure would otherwise be a maddeningly self-satisfied grin. “My birthday’s coming up, too,” Kara says. And then, her voice gentle, “But you already knew that, didn't you?”
Lena huffs out a breath. Of course she knows that. Kara is her best friend. It’s completely natural that Lena would spend night after sleepless night poring over catalogues and browsing the dark web, trying to find her the perfect gift.
“You got me these?” Kara grins, picking up a viridian green pencil and twirling it between two of her fingers. She looks so pretty and pleased that Lena nods, instantly resolved to trash the one-of-a-kind mini-anti-life-equation she’d managed to place the winning bid on, and gift Kara Holbein’s entire collection, as originally intended.
Kara still hasn’t moved. “Lena,” she says. “You know you didn’t need to spend all that money on me.”
Lena huffs out a humorless laugh. If Kara thinks the pencils are pricey, ditching the anti-life-equation is definitely the right call. It’s a shame—apparently it’s super effective against fruit flies and fungus gnats, both of which Kara has been unsuccessfully battling in her kitchen for the past couple of months. “You know me,” Lena says, something bitter twisting at the corners of her mouth. “Always going overboard.”
“No,” Kara tells her. The surety of her tone draws Lena’s gaze back up to those ludicrously blue eyes. “I do know you,” Kara says. “And you always get it exactly right.”
The silence that ensues stretches taut between them, stretches thin, fraying Lena’s nerves along with it. She should get Kara some canvases too, Lena decides. In fact, why not make it a set? Add some new brushes, and oil paints, maybe a new easel—oh!
“Mechanical erasers,” she blurts, and darts away.
Kara isn’t quite as quick on the uptake this time, taking long seconds to rejoin her on the other side of the aisle.
“Not like what?” Kara asks.
Lena blinks at her, puzzled by the non-sequitur. Kara’s eyebrows twitch together again, but this time they stay there, a tiny divot in the skin between them. Lena doesn’t know what to do with—well, any of it, quite frankly. “Since the secret’s out,” she says, pointedly looking away from the curious expression on her best friend’s face and gesturing at the collection of erasers, “do you prefer the—”
The feeling of Kara’s hand at her waist is highly unlikely and profoundly baffling. But when Lena looks down, trailing off, there it is; Kara’s thumb, settling against Lena's hip bone, her fingers sliding—sure and steady—into the gap of Lena’s open coat.
“You said you and Bruce were not like you and me,” Kara says. “What are we like?”
Lena’s heart is slamming in her chest like Kara is playing tennis with it. She’s so frustrated that Kara won’t just let it slide and allow Lena to escape with her pride intact; she’s so enamored with the way Kara looks at her, open and curious, as if she honestly doesn’t know what Lena is trying her best not to say for fear it will ruin their friendship.
The situation is so impossible that Lena doesn’t register the movement of Kara’s other hand until she’s slipped it around the back of her neck. It rests therejoining the other in its exploration of formerly firmly out-of-the-way places—with just the barest hint of pressure, her fingertips settling warm against the vulnerable skin of Lena’s nape.
Lena flusters, suddenly forced to address Kara’s question in a far more certain shade than she’s allowed them both to get away with over the years. If Lena opts for “the kind of friends I thought I’d never have”—a bitter, but familiar favorite—will Kara still help her blend the outline between the soft tones of their friendship and the vivid hues of what Lena is pretty certain is their mutual desire?
She swallows, watching the quick flash of Kara’s tongue as she wets her lip, reveling in the sight of it up close, struggling to maintain her solid form beneath the feeling of Kara’s hands on her body.
“There’s…” Kara whispers, swaying closer, “...probably a couple of things we really should talk about.” Her nose brushes Lena’s cheek before resting there, her eyes falling closed, their foreheads just barely touching. “But do you think it would be okay if—just for now—” She’s muttering the words almost directly into Lena’s mouth. “If I kissed you, first? Before, I mean, the rest of—”
Lena tugs herself up by the lapels of Kara’s jacket before Kara even finishes her question, the darkness behind her closed eyelids sparking into bright technicolor at the soft press of Kara’s lips against her own. They’re warm, and yielding, and slightly sticky—probably from the fresh-baked cinnamon roll she’d scarfed down before entering the store. Just before they pull apart, Lena catches the slightest hint of sweetness with the tip of her tongue.
Lena hums.
Kara is right. They really should be talking about this, and not necking in the middle of Eulalia Literature & Arts like a couple of boarding school kids on a school trip. But Kara is looking at her as if Lena is a wonderful secret freshly revealed, so Lena really can’t be expected to keep herself from being pulled back into Kara’s orbit. Can’t be blamed, even, for doing it lips-parted, so eager for another taste of what feels like the one bright spark of undiluted joy she’s ever felt she actually deserved that she shamelessly licks into Kara’s mouth, her entire body lighting up in oversaturated iridescence when Kara meets her with similarly unselfconscious sincerity.
Kara doesn’t let her go, even when they pause for air, both of her hands twitching against Lena’s body, as if keeping herself from pulling Lena back in is a tremendous effort. “Can we just stay here for a minute?” she hushes, her breath mingling with Lena’s own.
Lena smiles. “I think the security guard may have a couple of things to say about that,” she tells Kara, flashing an embarrassed glance over her shoulder at the woman in question.
“Oh, shoot.” Kara flinches, flushing an irresistible shade of pink Lena doubts even Holbein’s pigments could emulate. She rarely wears her glasses anymore, but Lena watches her reach for them out of habit, her movements jittery and raw.
“It’s alright, darling,” Lena soothes her, thrilling privately at the endearment as it falls off her lips. “I’m sure all will be forgiven when the cashier runs my credit card.”
And she’s right; when they exit, the guard gives them a nod that may even signal some mild approval. Whether that’s about the fortune Lena just spent on art supplies or their impromptu public exhibit, Lena isn’t sure.
Later, after weeks of conversations, after numerous tiny discoveries and world-shattering revelations—one of which has Kara confessing to once helping a fifth-dimensional imp create a half-dozen miserable alternate realities in which the full, vibrant spectrum of their love for each other went unacknowledged, and never led to a kiss—Kara blows out thirty-one colorful candles, and unwraps first (in the company of all of their friends) her gifts; and then (in the company of only her lover) Lena’s wrap-around A-line dress.
Lena’s legs are already trembling when Kara finally glides her fingers to the seam of her thigh, the pad of her thumb nudging gently at the patch of darkening cotton between Lena’s legs. “Could I try something new?” she asks, and Lena, who has discovered that Kara’s ideas only ever fall into one of two categories, one being complete absurdity and the other unmitigated brilliance, sighs.
“I want to paint you,” Kara says.
It so figures, Lena thinks. All of these new toys, and Kara can't decide which one she wants to play with first.
“Okay,” Lena says, driven to impatient acquiescence by Kara’s thumb, now moving in gentle, tiny circles against her.
“Okay?” Kara confirms, hand stilling, sitting up.
Lena clasps Kara’s teasing fingers and presses them down hard where she needs them, her back arching into the touch of their joined hands. “After,” she demands.

Supercorp headcanon:
Kara and Lena are both clingy, but in very different ways. Kara is obviously one who seeks and gives physical touch at any available moment. At first, this disturbed Lena. For most of her life, touch meant fear, anger, and revulsion.
Over time and with lots of set backs, Lena becomes adjusted to Kara’s touch and starts to crave it. For someone as touch starved as she is, Lena is still incredibly controlled as she seeks Kara’s comfort. While Lena will rarely initiate even the shortest of hugs, as soon as Kara hugs her, or holds her hand, Lena grasps on and holds tightly until Kara breaks the contact.
This is all well and good until other people start to notice. Once the Superfriends start commenting on their perpetual close proximity, Lena becomes self conscious and refuses to touch Kara. Of course, Kara thought she had upset Lena in some way and almost begs Lena to tell her how she can make up her “transgression.” Lena eventually admits that she was embarrassed of being called out and didn’t want to overstep any boundaries. Kara repeatedly assures Lena no boundary was crossed, and even vehemently encourages the brunette to seek Kara’s physical intimacy.
Here begins the complete and utter downfall of their “friendship” as they know it. Now both women are constantly touching, cuddling, and hugging. They touch so often that it becomes a rarity for them to be apart in any way if they are in the same room. Whether it be a hand at Lena’s back or Kara’s arm, the women are completely inseparable.
It isn’t until Kara starts pulling Lena into her lap at game nights or the bar that Lena begins to question how common it is for best friends to be as connected as they are. By all accounts, it’s not common, but at this point, Lena may go through withdrawals if she dials it back. So she says nothing and enjoys Kara’s intimacy while it lasts.
Once Kara starts kissing Lena’s cheek, forehead, and hand at any possible moment, Lena starts to think something is off about their friendship. The night Kara kisses her on the lips as the watch The Proposal, Lena builds up enough courage to confront Kara.
“What are we doing?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, what are we doing with the hugs, the touching, and now the kissing? Fuck, two days ago we woke up spooning and you haven’t said a word! When are we going to address this—this—”
“Lena.”
“I don’t understand, how can it be normal for friends to—”
“Lena! We aren’t friends. And we haven’t been for a long time...”
Like a record scratching, Lena freezes and just stares. When she comes back to herself, Kara is still talking but it feels like she’s messed a thing or two.
“…we’ve been dating for months, Lena. I thought you would be comfortable with this by now. We can take a step back if you want, but…”
“Dating? What do you mean dating?”
“Lena, what did you think we were doing this whole time? The constant contact, the lunch dates, and sleepovers. You really didn’t think anything of what we’ve been doing?”
Lena realizes that, just maybe, she wasn’t the best judge of what is and isn’t normal in a friendship. She also comes to the conclusion that she doesn’t want any of it to end.
“I..I thought this was normal? I didnt realize you were under the impression that we were dating. It seems that I have been a bit obtuse as to the status of our relationship.”
Kara is almost horrified at their months long miscommunication. The blonde sees no smooth way out of the situation and so begins what could have turned out to be the ramble of the century.
“So what, do we just stop? I’m sorry, I just thought we were taking it slow. Forgive me, if I had known—if I knew…I’m, I’m so sorry Lena, I’ll just go, and we can forget this ever happened—”
“NO!”
“No? Okay, I’ll give you some space—”
“No, Kara. I don’t want space. I don’t want anything to change. I want the dates, and the cuddling, and the kissing, and nights out with our friends. I want everything with you, Kara,” says Lena, as she reaches to grasp Kara face between her hands.
Kara leans into the touch, slowly gravitating closer to where Lena sits on her couch. Even as Kara grows closer, she hesitates to close the final distance between their lips. She couldn’t bear for Lena to dangle this opportunity between them.
“You do, are you sure?”
Lena decides that her next actions will speak louder than any platitudes she could give to Kara. With a push at Kara’s chest guiding her to lean back, Lena crawls into Kara’s lap, grasps Kara by the back of her neck, and leans down to place the slowest, sweetest kiss to Kara’s lips.
Not one to be outdone, Kara trails her hands along the sides of Lena’s thighs and up her back. Her left hand continues up to tangle into Lena’s hair while the right slides down to grasp Lena firmly by the ass.
With a small gasp, Lena deepens the kiss. With a gentle prod of her tongue to Kara’s lips, Lena licks into Kara’s mouth with a skillful tongue. With a groan, Kara separates their kiss.
“So, does this mean you’re my girlfriend?”
The brunette throws her head back in a joyful laugh.
“Yes, darling. I’ll be yours if you promise to be mine.”
Kara’s face lights up in happiness.
**********************
Months have gone by and Kara and Lena are happier than ever. Somehow they have grown closer, and although they have to deal with constant teasing remarks from all their friends, they wouldn’t separate for anything.

“Are you ready?”
Kara was at her desk, which was frankly rather unusual. She was plugging away at something, deep in concentration on whatever she was writing. Lena stopped to watch her for a while from the doorway, leaning against the frame. She found herself doing so more and more often now, largely for one reason: Kara Danvers was the prettiest girl Lena had ever seen.
If you asked Lena her type, she wouldn’t have described Kara Danvers, who was more athletic than svelte, built with strong shoulders and a swimmer’s silhouette. For all of Kara’s efforts to hide beneath soft cardigans and corduroy, it was obvious how jacked she was.
There was more than that, though. It wasn’t just her eyes, a peculiar shade of blue that Lena was sure she’d never seen before; it was the intelligence behind them, the curiosity and wit and shy, stammering confidence. Kara had a kind of nervous courage, for lack of a better way of putting it.
And she was gorgeous, of course. Honeyed curls, soft skin and pillowed lips and those gorgeous eyes, radiant eyes even behind a chunky frame.
Lena would never confess that she was a little in love with Kara. Even after the flower thing, and the buying the company thing, and…
Yeah.
“How about lunch?”
Kara looked up sharply. “What? Oh! Lena hi, I’m just-“
“Don’t give me that,” said Lena. “I’m treating you to lunch.”
“As my boss or my friend?” Kara asked, cautious.
“As me. No shop talk.”
Kara brightened; Lena had… put her in her place, not to put too fine a point on it, a few weeks ago when Kara snapped at her over a perfectly normal request to actually put in some time in her office.
It was necessary.
It also hurt like hell.
Kara made some noises about her work but acquiesced, grabbing her messenger bag and walking with Lena to the elevator. They rode in an moderately aggressive awkward silence; Kara seemed to be one of those people who chronically distrusts elevators despite-
The power went out.
The lights went with it. The elevator car dropped a foot in half a second and Lena felt herself crashing into a solid wall of Kara just before the emergency lights slammed on.
Lena took a moment. Kara had gently caught her and pulled her into a loose hug, for which Lena was grateful as it kept her from slamming her knees into the floor of the elevator.
“Lena? You okay?”
“I’m fine, you?”
Kara gently released her. “I’m… yeah. Fine. Are we stuck?”
“Power’s out. We might be here a while.”
Kara’s eyes went comically wide. “Nothing!”
Lena quirked a brow. “Okay.”
“Really, I’m fine. I was looking forward to lunch! You know me, always hungry. I wish I’d brought some snacks! I like snacks. Do you like snacks?”
Lena stared at her.
“Kara?”
“Of course you like snacks, that was so dumb. I’m sorry, I,” she looked frantically around the small space they found themselves in, “I don’t know why I’m… I’ll shut up.”
Lean shrugged and sat down, leaning against the back wall. Kara did not, choosing instead to pace, which was a tad annoying given the space they were in, but she was more worried about Kara than anything else.
She seemed… frantic.
“Are they going to come get us?”
“Eventually, if the power doesn’t kick back on first.”
“Do you think we’re stuck in between floors? I think we’re in between floors.”
“Probably.”
Kara flipped the panel down beneath the buttons and pulled out the phone inside, the plastic creaking in her grip. She pushed at the HELP button, but nothing happened.
“They know we’re in here right? Someone knows. They won’t leave us.”
Lena blinked.
Oh. Jesus.
“Kara,” said Lena. “Why don’t you sit down? We can just wait for help.”
She gave a short, sharp shake of her head in reply, like some frightened creature. She was now hugging herself and trembling.
“It’ll be soon, right? I can get out soon. I have to get out.”
“Kara,” said Lena.
Kara stared at her, and Lena knew.
“You’re claustrophobic.”
It wasn’t a question.
“Y-yes,” said Kara.
“Sit down with me, okay?”
Finally, she sat, shoulder to shoulder with Lena. Lena took her hand and squeezed it softly. Kara’s hand reminded her of an exotic bird quivering in her palm. Her pulse had to be racing.
“It’s going to be okay. They’re working on getting us out right now.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
Kara swallowed.
“I won’t let anything hurt you,” said Lena.
Kara looked at her with big, wide eyes.
“At least it’s not dark,” she said, lamely.
The lights immediately went out. Kara yelped and Lena felt her jump, hugging herself as her head thumped against the all.
“Oh Rao please no,” Kara whimpered, “please not again I can’t do it again.”
Rao? What the hell was a Rao?
“Lena, it’s dark.”
“I’m right here.”
Lena wrapped her arm around Kara’s shoulders, and found she was shaking like a leaf. A strained, choking sob ripped the air and Lena felt Kara plunge her face in her hands.
She was hot, almost feverish, and her coiled muscles felt like steel cables, even as they trembled. Lena could feel Kara’s heart pounding, incredibly fast.
“Get me out, please get me out.”
Her cell had no bars. Lena tried anyway; nothing.
Kara, very softly, began to cry. When something creaked, she almost screamed, jolting Lena.
“They can’t get in, they can’t get in, they can’t get in.”
“They?”
“The phantoms,” Kara choked out. “The other things. They want to get in, they want to get me.”
“Kara, we’re in an elevator. There’s nothing outside but concrete and steel cables.”
“Are you real?”
“Of course,” said Lena.
It felt like I’d sleep for years, then I’d wake up and something huge would be crushing my pod or the phantoms would be scraping their claws on the canopy and looking at me. They just stared. All they had to do was wait.”
“Your pod?”
Kara froze, going totally still.
“I… uhhh… I mean my… my bed? No, the car, from the accident, my parents died in the accident, I hit my heed.”
“You told me your parents passed in a house fire.”
Kara swallowed hard. “Did I?”
Her voice was thin and hysterical.
“Please, Lena, I’m scared.”
Lena gently guided Kara’s head to her shoulder and rocked her there, lightly carding her fingers through her hair.
“It’s alright, Kara. It’ll be alright.”
“Lena,”
“It’s okay,” said Lena. “Everyone gets scared. Everyone has a fear. Even you.”
Kara sucked in a breath.
“Pod,” said Lena. “Phantoms.”
“Lena I…”
“Shhh,” said Lena. “Hush now. You’ve already saved me at least three times, I owe you one.”
Kara gently wrapped her arms around Lena and sobbed into her shoulder. Lena suspected that Kara couldn’t break them out, so she didn’t press it. She just let Kara hold her and gently stroked her hair and softly sang an old lullaby she half remembered, stumbling back over the same verses.
There was a last a loud bang and Kara jerked, then let out a slow breath as the elevator doors at last spread open, forced apart by workmen.
Lena made sure Kara got out first. Then, Kara reached down and lifted her by the waist, setting Lena gently beside herself.
“Thank you,” Kara murmured.
Lena felt the eyes of the two workers behind her but she didn’t care. She smiled softly.
“I’m not mad. Actually, this explains a lot.”
Kara swallowed, hard.
“I think we missed lunch.”
“Mmm,” Lena gave her a coquettish smile. “Why don’t we get dinner, then? Just us, at my place.”
Kara smiled, wiping away her tears.
“I’d like that.”

Supercorptober 2024 Day 5: Alone
ao3 fic link.
Lena wakes up, and she knows instantly she’s alone. Panic sets in for a moment, because Kara wouldn’t just leave, not after last night.
Lena would though. Lena has, after a one night stand where they did what they needed to do so she left in the early hours of the morning.
But this isn’t like this, this is Kara. Kara who told her she loves her, Kara who kissed her so gently that Lena cried.
This is Kara, her best friend, the person she trusts most, the person she loves the most, and now she knows Kara loves her too.
Lena sits up and looks around, blanket clutched to her chest. She sees her clothes neatly folded in a pile, which is definitely not where she left them last night. She’s pretty sure some didn’t even make it into the room.
Lena blushes at the memory.
She looks around for her phone, and realises it didn’t make it to the room with them either, that it’s probably still in her purse in the living room.
That’s the first thing she needs, to find Kara. That, and she needs coffee. She debates for a moment putting on her clothes but instead decides to grab a hoodie and pair of Kara’s pants instead.
The hoodie smells like Kara, this whole place does, and for a moment it makes her want to bury herself back in bed and wait for Kara.
Because she knows Kara wouldn’t just leave her, knows Kara will be back.
It’s in the kitchen that Lena figures out where Kara is gone. Or at least that she’ll be back, a scribbled note on the table.
Be back soon. -K x
It’s still early, and Lena knows she probably should go back to her own apartment, shower and get ready for work. But she’s not going to do that, not yet. Because all she can think about is seeing Kara, kissing her again and making sure that she doesn’t regret what happened.
Lena doesn’t.
Lena hasn’t even had time to consider making herself a coffee when the door clicks open and Kara is walking through the door.
“Oh,” Kara startles, clearly not expecting to see Lena. For a moment, Lena wonders if she should have left, but she doesn’t need to worry when Kara continues. “I was hoping to surprise you in bed.”
Lena had been so focused on Kara, she hadn’t noticed the paper bag and coffee cup holder in her hands.
Lena suddenly doesn’t know what to say. This is all new to her. Not only has their relationship changed overnight, but she doesn’t want to mess this up. Kara is too important to her and she can’t lose her over this. Lena doesn’t have a great track record with relationships and she’s never felt like this about anyone before, never wanted a relationship to work out like she wants this too.
“Are you panicking?” Kara asks, suddenly much closer than before, food no longer in her hands.
“No,” Lena replies. Kara raises her eyebrow and Lena knows she’s been caught. “Ok, maybe a little. I don’t want to mess this up.”
Kara takes her hands, and Lena instantly feels her thoughts settle, the warmth of Kara’s hands seeping into her skin.
“I know, me too. I don’t know what’s going to happen but I do know that you and me? We can do anything together. So, we probably will both mess up, but I know that no matter what happens, we can get through anything, because it’s us.”
Lena smiles. “Thank you.”
She knows this will be a constant worry but for now it’s quietened down, both because of Kara’s words but also because Kara is smiling now too and it’s hard to focus on anything else when Kara is smiling at her.
Kara leans forward and Lena gets the memo, meeting her halfway in a kiss that feels so much like coming home that Lena feels like crying again.
“Good morning,” Kara mumbles against her mouth, Lena can feel her smile against her own.
“You taste like cinnamon,” Lena replies, and Kara pulls away. Lena would regret her words but Kara is grinning, looking sheepish in a way that’s too cute for words.
“I got hungry.”
Lena laughs. When is Kara not hungry?
“I like this, too,” Kara says, tugging on Lena’s shirt. “You look good in my clothes.” Kara pauses. “You look good out of them too.”
Kara’s blushing as she says the words, it’s adorable.
“Is that so?” Lena asks, and it’s her turn to lift her eyebrow.
Kara leans forward, clearly embarrassed as she hides her face in Lena’s shoulder.
“Yes,” Kara mumbles and Lena laughs, wrapping her arms around her best friend. ...Or girlfriend? She’s not sure, but they’re going to have plenty of time to figure that out.
Lena grins. “Good to know.”

there's just something about kara's unwavering loyalty towards lena even when they disagree on certain things or even when they are in the middle of a heated argument, if lena's safety is on the line - she drops everything and automatically switches to protective mode. lena's safety is always her top priority. she doesn't even question if lena's in the right or wrong or doesn't wait for the facts laid out on her. it's not about who's right or wrong. she's automatically on lena's side. and it's not even supergirl kara who protects EVERYONE. she has this special kind of persona that comes out when lena's in danger. she's not a hero because we know when it comes to lena's safety, she will choose lena's safety over the entire world. it's like a combination of both. or maybe kara zor-el comes out. it's just an overprotective alien who will do anything for the love of her life and that's just the most beautiful and gayest shit i've ever seen. i love these idiots.

Sunflowers and Stardust
Kara is exhausted. Not just tired, not just sore—exhausted in a way that sinks into her bones, that tugs at her limbs, that makes the weight of the world feel a little too heavy today.
She barely makes it to Lena’s office before collapsing onto the plush couch, letting out a soft, weary sigh as she buries her face in one of the throw pillows.
Lena watches from her desk, heart aching. Kara never complains—never asks for anything—but Lena sees the way her shoulders slump, the way she moves just a little slower, the way the spark in her blue eyes has dimmed.
That won’t do.
With quiet, deliberate steps, Lena crosses the room and kneels beside the couch, her hand reaching out to brush through Kara’s hair. Soft, gentle strokes, reverent.
“Baby,” she murmurs, voice sweet as honey. “You’re running on empty again, aren’t you?”
Kara hums, barely lifting her head. “‘M fine.”
Lena’s lips press together. She knows better. She cups Kara’s cheek, thumb tracing lightly over the tired skin beneath her eye. “No, you’re not,” she whispers. “And you don’t have to be, my love.”
Kara exhales, leaning into Lena’s touch like she needs it to keep herself tethered.
Lena smiles, soft and knowing. “Come with me,” she coaxes. “Let me take care of you.”
Kara peeks one eye open, brow furrowing. “Lena—”
“No arguments,” Lena interrupts, brushing her lips against Kara’s forehead. “I won’t let you say no.”
Kara sighs, but there’s the tiniest hint of a smile at the corner of her lips. “You’re bossy.”
“And you love me for it.”
Kara doesn’t argue.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The drive is quiet, peaceful. Kara slumps in the passenger seat, legs curled up, eyes drifting closed. Every so often, Lena sneaks a glance at her, fingers tightening around the steering wheel because God, she loves her. Loves her in a way that makes her chest ache, in a way that makes her want to wrap Kara in warmth and softness and never let the world hurt her again.
When they pull up to the sunflower field, Kara blinks awake, confused.
Lena grins as she unbuckles her seatbelt. “Come on, darling.”
Kara steps out, rubbing at her eyes. And then she sees it.
A sea of sunflowers stretching endlessly under the late afternoon sun, their golden faces turned toward the sky. The light catches in Kara’s hair, making her glow, and Lena’s breath catches.
Kara turns to her, eyes wide, shining. “You—” Her voice is small, wonderstruck. “Lena…”
Lena steps close, brushing her knuckles against Kara’s jaw. “Did you know sunflowers always turn toward the light?” she whispers. “Just like you, baby.”
Kara blinks fast, chest rising unevenly. “Lena…”
Lena presses a kiss to her cheek, then her temple, then the tip of her nose. “You do so much,” she murmurs. “You give so much. Let me give this to you, just for today.”
Kara exhales, shuddering, and then she’s collapsing into Lena’s arms, burying her face in the crook of her neck. Lena holds her, one hand cradling the back of her head, the other wrapped tight around her waist.
“I love you,” Lena whispers, lips against Kara’s hair. “So much.”
Kara clings to her, trembling with something too big for words.
Lena just holds her tighter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They walk through the field, hands entwined, brushing against golden petals. The sky bleeds into hues of pink and lavender, and Lena watches the sunset reflected in Kara’s eyes.
Kara sighs, leaning her head against Lena’s shoulder. “I needed this.”
Lena smiles, pressing a kiss to her hair. “I know, my love.”
Kara’s fingers tighten around hers. “How do you always know?”
Lena turns, cupping Kara’s face with both hands. “Because I love you,” she whispers. “With everything I am.”
Kara’s breath catches. And then she’s kissing her—soft and slow and aching, like she’s melting into her, like Lena is the only thing holding her together.
Lena sighs against her lips, hands slipping around Kara’s waist. “Come here, baby,” she whispers, tugging her close. Kara goes easily, resting her weight against Lena, letting herself be held.
When they finally pull apart, Kara’s eyes are glassy, her cheeks pink. “I love you,” she murmurs, like a secret, like a promise.
Lena smiles, tucking a strand of hair behind Kara’s ear. “I know, darling.”
And as the stars blink to life above them, Kara lets herself believe—for just a moment—that maybe, just maybe, the weight of the world isn’t hers alone to carry.
